In view of the increasing arrests of young people during anti-extradition protests since June 2019, Deputy Commissioner (Operations) (DCP OPS) Siu Chak-yee chaired meetings together with Director of Operations Kwok Yam-yung, Assistant Commissioner (Crime) Yuen Yuk-kin and officers of Police Public Relations Branch (PPRB) to explain police work and exchange views with chairpersons from 18 Districts' School Heads Associations and Federations of Parent-Teacher Associations (FPTAs) on January 14 and 16 respectively at the Police Headquarters. Regional Commanders, District Commanders and Police Community Relations Officers also attended the meetings.
At the meetings, both the principals and parents expressed deep concern on the arrests of students and young people and shared their views on future collaborations between the police, schools and parents. The police addressed their concerns and talked about the viral effect of fake news as well as explained the general principles regarding the arrests of students in schools and the use of tear gas.
Mr Siu thanked the principals and parents for supporting the police and pledged that the police would enhance communication and cooperation with Districts' School Heads Associations and FPTAs. Moreover, PPRB officers, Police Community Relations Officers and School Liaison Officers would timely rebut widespread fake news and misleading information on social media platforms and disseminate relevant messages to stakeholders in the education sector so as to prevent students and youths from being misled to commit crimes.
Both the principals and parents appreciated the meetings chaired by Deputy Commissioner. The meetings facilitated the exchange of views between the District Commanders, principals and parents and enhanced mutual understanding. They also welcomed the regularisation of the biannual meetings in the coming future. Both parties would make concerted efforts to provide a safe studying environment for students.
