Opening of the Shenzhen Bay Port Police Base marks a new era for the Force in providing quality services to the public at boundary control points, said Deputy Commissioner (Management) Fung Siu-yuen at the base's opening ceremony on November 28.

He said commissioning of the Shenzhen Bay Port, being the first boundary control point between Shenzhen and Hong Kong, had shortened the time required for boundary-crossing for both passengers and vehicles. It also underlined the closer ties between Shenzhen and Hong Kong.

Besides officiating guests from the Architectural Services Department, Electrical and Mechanical Services Department and the main contractor for construction works for the Police Base, more than 100 guests from both Shenzhen and SAR government departments, including New Territories North Regional Commander Cheung Siu-wah, witnessed the opening ceremony of the Police Base.

"The base serves not only as an office for officers deployed to the Shenzhen Bay Port, but also a command and control centre of the Force in the area", said Mr Fung. "The nine-storey observation tower of this Police Base is the tallest building within the Hong Kong Port Area. From this base, officers can monitor the situation within the Port Area and keep close communication with other departments in the port as well as with frontline officers. Besides, the Enhanced Under Vehicle Surveillance System and the Police Reporting Centre in the Port Area also enable us to provide quality services to the public," he added.

In closing, Mr Fung expressed his heartfelt gratitude to those who had taken part in the project, and wished the staff of all departments in the Port Area every success in their work.

D OPS opens Ha Tsuen Weigh Centre

On the same day, Director of Operations Tsang Wai-hung officiated at the opening of the Ha Tsuen Weigh Station, and congratulated all who had been involved in the planning, construction and maintenance of "this beautiful and excellent facility".

He said in his opening speech: "The trade between the Mainland and Hong Kong is flourishing, due mainly to closer economic integration, resulting in an ever increasing number of goods and passengers crossing the boundary. In 1993, the Shenzhen Municipal Government proposed constructing a new boundary crossing point at Shekou in Shenzhen. The project was subsequently approved by the Central Government, and works commenced. The Shenzhen Bay Port and the Ha Tsuen Weigh Station were successfully completed in 2007."

Explaining the background of construction of the weigh station, Mr Tsang said: "As the frontline of law enforcement, traffic officers have the absolute responsibility to enforce traffic regulations through our Selective Traffic Enforcement Policy, in order to protect the safety of all citizens in Hong Kong. As such, we constructed a weigh station at Ha Tsuen, a place connected to the Shenzhen Bay Port, in order to provide a strategic operational post to our frontline units, one of the bases for tackling serious traffic offences and cross boundary crime."
