Carry out your duties with tact and patience - DMS | |||
Director of Management Services (DMS) Mike Dowie reminded officers of Police Tactical Unit (PTU) Golf Company on July 17 that it is extremely important to retain the general public's confidence and support by carrying out their duties professionally and with tact and patience. Speaking as a Reviewing Officer at the officers' passing-out parade at PTU Headquarters, Mr Dowie said the training they had received must be put to good use on the streets, "where the challenges facing the Force are ever increasing". "I have absolutely no doubt in my mind that we are all members of one of the best Police Forces in the world. I say this confidently as I have been fortunate to represent the Hong Kong Police at many international forums in numerous countries. "I have also had the opportunity to discuss policing with heads of state and other political leaders as well as study other police organisations. "We can hold our heads very, very high and do not let anyone persuade you differently," he added. Noting that police work is challenging, Mr Dowie further reminded the officers: "We are not angels nor are we robots. We are also not perfect; no one or any organisation is. Nevertheless, we do all have a responsibility to try to do our very best within the law at all times. "The general public is fascinated by the 'Blue Berets' so there are even greater pressures on you. If you are firm, fair and consistent in all that you do, you will maintain the public's trust. "I am confident that the training you have received here at PTU has prepared you to wear the 'Blue Beret' proudly and honourably." Telling the officers that his impending retirement from the Force after 37 years "is tinged with some sadness", Mr Dowie said: "I am also sure that the Force will further flourish in the hands of capable men and women such as you." Finally, he wished each and every one of PTU - Golf Company and every staff of PTU - good health and success in their careers.
