The skills and agility of police dogs as well as the professionalism of Police Dog Handlers impressed more than 3,000 dog lovers at the Police Dog Trial 2013 on November 3.

Co-organised by the Police Dog Unit and the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), the trial was open to the public and raised some $260,000 for SPCA and Operation Santa Claus. About 1,000 members of the underprivileged groups were offered free admission to the event.

Officiating at the opening ceremony, Assistant Commissioner (Operations) Cheung Tak-keung said the event provided an opportunity for the Force to demonstrate the competence of police dogs as well as to promote animal care.

Competing Police Dog Handlers demonstrated their skills and close bond with their canine partners in obedience and man-work competitions.

Other programmes included demonstration of drug detection and explosive search by police dogs, performances by pet dogs, and games booths.

After rounds of an eye-opening contest, Police Dog Handler Cheng Lai-hang and his partner, Semmy, won both the obedience and man-work competitions, ranking as the Overall Champion.
