To address the problems of drug abuse and related crimes, Lantau District (LTDIST) works closely with other government departments and Non-government Organisations. In its current anti-narcotics publicity campaign, LTDIST disseminates drug abuse-related knowledge to different sectors of the community in a bid to clear up their misunderstanding and boost young persons' ability to resist the temptation of dangerous drugs and to mobilise the community to help fight drugs and crimes.
On November 27, LTDIST held an anti-narcotics workshop for 90 residents comprising Senior Police Call members, parents, housewives, mutual aid committee members, and villagers.
At the workshop, Police Community Relations Officers stressed the adverse effects of drug abuse, and arranged a young rehabilitated drug abuser to tell the audience how he first got hooked to drugs, his subsequent life associated with drugs, and peer influence. He also spoke of the family support he got and the difficulties he encountered when he tried to quit drugs.
The workshop succeeded in making the audience more conscious of the problems of drug abuse and the roles they can play in addressing the problems.
