The Police Pumas capped a very successful season for the Police Rugby Club by winning the National League 5 Championship in convincing style on February 22, giving them an impressive 12 wins out of their 14 games played over the five-month season.
The side comprises a solid mixture of veteran serving players like Club Chairman Duncan McCosh and retired officers like Jacky "Shanghai" Ng (the first local Chinese player to participate in Division 1 rugby back in 1991) as well as young Junior Police Officers learning the game, together with developing youngsters from the Operation Breakthrough programme. It is a mix that has proven successful both on and off the pitch as Chairman McCosh pointed out: "There has been a great blend of age experience who have the ability to 'talk a good game' on the one hand, and youthful enthusiasm and bags of running on the other! The team spirit has been first class and winning the league trophy so comprehensively as well as against some accomplished sides is a great tribute to all players, our coach Stuart Gunn and Manager John Carroll."
"This league triumph is just one aspect of a real success story for Police Rugby as the Club fielded three competitive men's teams and a women's (the Sirens) team throughout the season. Although the Men's 1st team and Panthers 2nd team finished mid-table in their respective leagues, the number of players has been healthy and performances strong. The Sirens, meanwhile, enjoyed an excellent campaign with the quality of their performances, going from strength to strength as they picked up five wins in what is only their third year of league participation.
"Together with over 150 mini rugby players and the Breakthrough programme, the Police Rugby Club has never been bigger and all officers and their family members are welcome to give this great sport a try," Mr McCosh added.
