The Technology Crime Division (TCD) of the Commercial Crime Bureau (CCB) and the National Cyber Crime Unit (NCCU) of the UK National Crime Agency (NCA) jointly organised a one-day Technology Crime Investigation Training Workshop for TCD officers on February 28.
At the workshop, six NCCU experts shared with TCD knowledge and experience of various aspects of technology crime and cyber security investigation. The experts also introduced the roles and functions of NCCU, which was established only late last year in response to the rapidly changing cyber threats worldwide.
Twenty trainees, comprising junior police officers and inspectorate officers from the Operations, Forensics, Support, and Cyber Security sections of TCD, attended the workshop.
Speaking at the opening of the workshop, CCB Senior Superintendent Chan Wing-on thanked the NCCU experts for delivering the one-day intensive training to TCD. He pointed out that the workshop acquainted TCD with the investigative and forensic techniques being adopted by NCCU, besides marking a milestone in the partnership between NCCU and the Force.
After the opening, TCD Senior Inspector Lau Ka-ho explained the capability of the Force to tackle the challenges posed by technology crime and cyber security.
The Deputy Director of NCA and Head of NCCU, Mr Andy Archibald, gave a presentation on the functions of NCCU and the latest national cyber security structures of the UK. He stressed that international co-operation, industry participation and law enforcement capability are essential for fighting borderless and increasingly sophisticated cyber crimes.
The latter part of the workshop covered a wide range of practical topics, including cyber intelligence gathering, cyber crime investigation and computer forensic examination. Before conclusion of the workshop, TCD arranged a discussion session with the NCCU experts for the trainees to share their views on the techniques to deal with different types of prevailing cyber crimes.
