In a bid to heighten public awareness of street scams and counterfeit banknotes, Commercial Crime Bureau (CCB) mounted joint publicity at Lo Wu and Lok Ma Chau Spurline on May 9 in conjunction with the Regional Crime Prevention Office of New Territories North Region and the Police Community Relations Office of Border District.
The officers handed out publicity flyers to, and answered many enquiries from, the public on the ways to avoid falling preys to street scams and to identify fake banknotes.
In the first quarter of this year, 22 cases of street scams were reported, an increase of about five percent compared with the same period last year. In the same period, 782 counterfeit Hong Kong banknotes and 1 280 counterfeit RMB banknotes came to light. Part of the counterfeit Hong Kong and RMB banknotes came from the "money swapping" scam on the Mainland.
