This time, we discuss a new kind of Instant Messaging (IM) application that does not require Internet connection - Firechat.

Firechat lets you send messages or photos to users nearby. Since no registration is required, you can simply fill in a name and then send messages to everybody. In other words, Firechat lets you send messages anonymously.

Based on the new Multipeer Connectivity Framework technology, Firechat can detect nearby Firechat users and establish direct communication channel with peers even if phone signal is absent. That means users may simply enable Wifi or Bluetooth, enter any name, select "Nearby" mode, and start sending messages. This feature is very useful in environments like cinemas, football stadium, market, or in the basement of a building. If you prefer talking to users afar, you may switch to "Everyone" mode. Although Internet or mobile cellular connection is required, you still remain anonymous.

As any user can use Firechat anonymously, there is no guarantee of the genuineness of the identity of the person you are talking to. Even worse is that there is no option to select which user you send message to. If you send a message, it will be broadcasted to all connected users, regardless it is in "Nearby" mode or "Everyone" mode. All you have sent is open to the public. The only difference between the two modes is that the "Nearby" mode is bounded to users in 30 feet. You never know who is connected if a user remains silent. In other words, what you have sent are prone to surveillance.

To protect your privacy, avoid using Firechat as IM if you want to say anything personal, such as personal data, credit card information or sensitive information.
