Commercial Crime Bureau (CCB) identified a cross-boundary counterfeit credit card (CCC) syndicate in June last year. Investigations showed that the syndicate stole credit card data and arranged production of CCCs, which were used by accomplices from Hong Kong and the Mainland to make purchases in Hong Kong, Macao and other countries.
An operation was mounted in August last year. Following the six-month operation, CCB eventually neutralised the syndicate at the end of January, arrested eight suspects, including the mastermind and two Mainland core members, and smashed a CCC manufacturing centre in Kowloon. CCB also seized over 100 locally made CCCs as well as manufacturing paraphernalia.
In recognition of CCB's professional performance, representatives from the Hong Kong Management Committee-Card Authorisation System in PRC presented certificates of appreciation to CCB officers on May 9.
In response, CCB Chief Superintendent Wong Ying-wai said the operation owed its success to the co-operation and support from banks.
