New Territories South (NTS) Region's "Project R" cum Summer Vacation Crime Prevention Press Conference was held at NTS Regional Headquarters on June 11, chaired by Superintendent Chow Kwong-chung and Mr Chan Man-ho, Supervisor of the Youth Crime Prevention Centre of the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups (HKFYG).
"Project R" is a joint venture of NTS and the HKFYG to provide referral service to juvenile delinquents aged 10 to 17 and their families. Launched in June 2012 in Tsuen Wan and Kwai Tsing Police Districts as a pilot scheme and reviewed six months afterwards, the project has shown a promising effect in terms of juvenile delinquency relapse rate and family relationship.
In January last year, "Project R" was extended to Sha Tin, Lantau and Airport Police Districts, and is being fully implemented in NTS. So far, NTS has referred 592 youngsters to the HKFYG for follow-up action, and their relapse rate is less than six per cent.
Combating juvenile delinquency is one of NTS's Operational Priorities and it will launch a large-scale operation, "Stormbreaker", in the upcoming school summer holiday with a view to reducing juvenile delinquency with various approaches, including prevention, active support, enforcement, intervention and liaison.
