Thirty members of "Project Himalaya" were appointed as Non-ethnic Chinese (NEC) Juvenile Fight Crime Ambassadors at a ceremony held by Yuen Long District (YLDIST) on July 16 to assist in disseminating messages in crime prevention and road safety to their communities.

Speaking in the ceremony, Acting YLDIST Commander Kerry Carew thanked the ambassadors, their parents and police volunteers for supporting the project. He also encouraged the ambassadors to serve the community, boost their self-confidence and discipline and lead a healthy lifestyle.

Since June this year, the fight crime ambassadors have been taking part in many related activities, including anti-drug seminars and distribution of publicity leaflets at mosques and places frequented by NEC. This summer, they will assist YLDIST in arranging for NEC youths to visit a Light Rail Depot and Yuen Long Police Station. For improving their sense of discipline and physical fitness, YLDIST will offer the fight crime ambassadors foot drill training and arrange for them to take part in sports competitions with non-government organisations and schools. It is hoped these activities would broaden their social network and help them integrate into the community.

YLDIST has been running "Project Himalaya" since early last year for enhancing the Chinese language proficiency, self-confidence and physical fitness of NEC Junior Police Call members. The project also seeks to equip them with the attributes to join the Force.

There have been favourable comments on "Project Himalaya" since its inception. Mr Ahmed Tafail, father of mentee Alam, pointed out that the project helped his son improve Chinese language proficiency and develop a positive attitude and values. Mr Mohammad Irfan, a member of the Yuen Long District Fight Crime Committee and a Pakistani community leader, also pointed out that the project not only spread fight crime messages, but also helped NEC youths integrate into the community and promoted racial harmony.
