The Police Boxing Club's reputation for fitness, boxing skills and discipline has spread in the local community. Recently, Chairman of Breakthrough Boxing, Senior Superintendent (SSP) Barry Smith, who is also a co-founder of Police Boxing Club, and Chairman of the Police Boxing Club, Chief Inspector Francis Carroll, were approached by the Hong Kong Rugby National Team to design a fitness training session for the team's players in their lead up to qualifying matches for the Rugby World Cup.
The rugby team players attended a very intensive session under the guidance of Police Boxing Trainers at New Territories North (NTN) Headquarters on July 3. "It was a tremendous success", said SSP Smith. "Although already well conditioned, the players were amazed at the different levels of fitness required for boxing. We certainly gave a hard send-off and they are already asking about future similar sessions with us."
After the session, the team's Head Coach said, "In my last three years as National Coach that is the best training session I have seen both on and off the pitch."
Whilst NTN and the Police Boxers have been active in pursuing the Strategic Direction 1 - "Engaging the Community" over the years, the training session has brought a new dimension to the effort. It is also an honour for Police Boxers to contribute to the development of the sport and support the Hong Kong Rugby National Team.
The Club's annual summer boxing events held earlier have been a great success with up to 500 people attending the June Boxing Night with Regional Commander NTN Chung Siu-yeung and Deputy Regional Commander Kowloon West Duncan McCosh presiding as guests of honour.
