At the Police Children's Education Trust and Police Education and Welfare Trust Scholarship Presentation Ceremony 2013/14 held at the Police Officers' Club on August 20, 58 Police children received certificates of award from the Chairman of the Joint Management Committee of the two trusts, Mr Michael Lee, and Commissioner Tsang Wai-hung.
Since their establishment over 47 years ago, the education trusts have been providing subsidies to tens of thousands of police children in the forms of awards and grants to motivate them to study hard. In 2000, the trusts further set up scholarships for police children admitted to universities with outstanding academic results. In the academic year 2013/14, 58 students were presented with the scholarships.
Speaking at the presentation ceremony, Mr Tsang pointed out that the two education trusts had been running smoothly over the years, thanks to the guidance and assistance for trusts management and investment by the chairmen and members of the Joint Management Committee and the Investment Advisory Board of the trusts.
Thanking the generous donors for their continuous support over the years, Mr Tsang said that in the last decade, the trusts had received donations of more than $28 million for the benefit of more than 7 000 Police children. He also extended special thanks to the Principal Assistant Secretary of the Education Bureau, Mr Yung Po-shu, and the Chief Executive Officer of the Fung Kai Public School, Mr Ma Siu-leung, who have stepped down as members of the Joint Management Committee, for their great contributions to management of the trusts over the past few years.
Congratulating the scholarship winners on their achievements, Mr Tsang called on them to study hard, develop good characters, and broaden their horizons. He also encouraged them to pursue lifelong learning so as to realise their full potential academically. To the parents of the awardees, Mr Tsang also offered congratulations for grooming "such outstanding students" despite their heavy workload.
Also speaking at the ceremony, Mr Lee congratulated the scholarship winners, reminded them that there were no shortcuts to success, and called on them to pay back to society and uphold "our Lion Rock Spirit".
Finally, Mr Lee advised the winners to strive for a balanced development in the domains of ethics, intellect, physique, social skills as well as aesthetics, in addition to their academic achievements.
A student representative, Kwok Man-cheong, majoring in Conservation at the University of Hong Kong, expressed his gratitude to both the Force and the education trusts, pointing out that the scholarship was not only a recognition of his effort, but also a drive and encouragement for his future development.
Sharing his personal goals, he said he would like to work for local heritage conservation, balance traditional culture and modern development, and promote public awareness of heritage conservation and revitalisation projects for sustainable development.
Man-cheong encouraged police children to make the most of their scholarships to equip themselves and broaden their horizons before thanking both the Force and the education trusts on behalf of all the awardees.
