Lantau District (LTDIST) joined forces with Islands District Fight Crime Committee (DFCC) on August 12 in launching a Lantau Village GuardWATCH Scheme - a crime prevention initiative to reduce crime in villages, particularly burglary.
The scheme will engage rural networks and villagers, and, through enhanced communication, provide information on crime prevention. LTDIST hopes villagers would, in return, provide information to police.
At a meeting of the scheme, DFCC Chairman, Mr Yung Chi-ming, and District Commander Patrick Laidler presented a charter to the villagers who had joined the scheme. Mr Laidler reiterated that the objective of the scheme was to reduce crime by engaging community leaders, adding that the DFCC could play a vital role by providing leadership and financial support for the scheme.
Under the scheme, regular liaison meetings and ad hoc crime prevention campaigns will be organised for villagers and the DFCC members have applauded this initiative. Initially the scheme will cover the Lantau South Rural Committee and concerned villagers, but the plan is to extend it to cover other rural committees and Discovery Bay.
