Marine Port District (MPDIST) teamed up with Peng Chau Rural Committee and the local community in a bid to break down racial barriers with the Non-ethnic Chinese (NEC) community on Peng Chau with sports and music on November 16.
A MPDIST team took on a NEC team and local team in competitive and entertaining basketball matches, which were followed by cultural exchanges on music with the NEC community. The NEC community played music of their own cultures in the landmark of Peng Chau, Lung Mo Temple Plaza, symbolising all races are united.
In his opening speech, MPDIST Commander Lee Kiu-ki thanked the NEC community for their contributions to the development and stability of Peng Chau and hoped the sports and music exchange would enhance mutual understanding and reduce conflicts among ethnicities for social harmony.
The NEC community were pleased with MPDIST's efforts to organise the event. Mr Gonzales, a prominent NEC leader on Peng Chau, commented that the event was the first of its kind in Peng Chau's history, taking place in the landmark of Peng Chau to symbolise merging of the NEC community with the locals.
