A dedicated training unit known as Traffic Equipment Training Unit (TETU) was established on the Fanling Campus of Police College on January 30. Under the command of Superintendent (PD&TTC), the unit comprises one Inspector or Senior Inspector, one Station Sergeant and five Sergeants.
The TETU is a supporting-the-frontline measure with the aim of further enhancing the quality of traffic equipment training through centralisation in a dedicated unit. Gradually taking over all traffic equipment training from the Traffic Training Team (TTT), the TETU will start providing traffic equipment training courses in the first quarter of this year, such as those related to Digital MultaRadar, TruCAM Laser Gun, ProVida HD2000, Smokemeter, Portable Weighscale and Drug Driving.
The Officer-in-charge of TETU, Inspector Lau Po-wah, commented, "In the past, the training in various types of enforcement equipment used by frontline traffic officers was provided by a part-time TTT with coordination by Traffic Branch Headquarters, comprising personnel drawn from all the Regional Traffic Formations. Now traffic equipment training can be centralised at Force level, ensuring that training will be provided by full-time training instructors at an enhanced standard."
Police College will, with input from other stakeholder units, conduct a review on operation of the TETU within 12 months with a view to professionalising delivery of traffic training.
