The Cyber Security Symposium 2015, entitled "Safeguarding Our Cyber World Hand in Hand", was held by the Cyber Security and Technology Crime Bureau (CSTCB) at Police Headquarters on March 19 and 20 with the aim of strengthening the liaison network with local and overseas stakeholders and promoting a cyber security culture. It attracted over 230 local participants representing 80 entities from local public and private sectors, besides 29 overseas cyber crime investigators from 13 countries and a representative from the INTERPOL Global Centre for Innovation.
The symposium comprised a "Management Track" on day one and four technical demonstrations on day two. The "Management Track" was designed for both management and technical staff in the fields of information technology and cyber security. A total of nine renowned speakers from overseas prominent information security vendors gave presentations on the trend and an analysis of various cyber attacks and malware infections. Also shared between the speakers and the audience were the corresponding security measures and strategies for defending from cyber threats.
The technical demonstrations were mainly designed for technical staff to acquire the necessary technical knowledge for defending their information systems from malicious cyber attacks. Discussed in depth were the common cyber attack techniques used by hackers and the various methods for identifying potential loopholes and vulnerabilities.
Welcoming the speakers and participants as an officiating guest at the opening of the symposium, Assistant Commissioner (Crime) John Ribeiro underlined the importance of local and international co-operation in cyber security. "Owing to the borderless nature of technology crime and cyber security incidents, the concerted efforts by local and overseas stakeholders are of paramount importance. The integrity and security of the cyber world starts with our long-lasting partnership", he noted.
Also speaking at the symposium as an officiating guest, the Acting Government Chief Information Officer, Mr Victor Lam, highlighted the commitments, future developments and long-term strategies of the Government in cyber security.
Speaking at the close of the symposium, CSTCB Superintendent Collins Leung described the symposium as a good platform for local I.T. practitioners and the cyber investigators in Eurasia region to foster the culture of information sharing and collaboration.
For the participants, the symposium provided a valuable opportunity for obtaining the most updated information on cyber security.
