Communications Branch (COMMS) celebrated the opening of its new Machine Workshop on March 31 with Director of Management Services Chiu Wai-yin, Assistant Commissioner (Information Systems) Peter Cornthwaite, Police Civil Secretary Leung Ho-yin, and Chief Telecommunications Engineer Jolly Wong as officiating guests.

Giving an opening speech, Ms Chiu praised COMMS colleagues for their contribution and dedication over the years to supporting frontline officers to serve the public more effectively.

"With the Force facing more and more unprecedented challenges in recent years, there will be a continuous demand for COMMS workshop services and a move towards more precision jobs and bulk production of some essential mechanical components and mounting kits," said Ms Chiu.

The guests were given a demonstration of three new machines and an introduction of a range of products fabricated with the machines by Police Telecommunications Inspector Choi Chau-wan and Assistant Telecommunications Inspector Raymond Cheung.

"The new computer-controlled machines not only give us the precision required for some essential components, but also provide a safer working environment in terms of Occupational Safety and Health for our staff with the fast moving parts of the machines now being fully shielded and isolated during the fabrication process. The machines can fabricate identical products in bulk quantity much faster," Mr Choi said.

The COMMS Machine Workshop has been operating and serving the Force for over 30 years, fabricating all kinds of components to meet the operational needs of formations.  With the acquisition of three new computer-numerical-controlled machines, it is now time to say goodbye to the old engraving, lathe and milling machines, which, despite regular inspection and maintenance, need to be retired to enable COMMS to focus on enhancing workshop services in terms of quality precision, productivity and efficiency.
