Forty-seven security companies were honoured at the Security Services Best Training Award (SSBTA) 2014 held on March 27. Among the companies, 20 were presented with Gold Award, 15 with Silver Award, seven with Bronze Award and five with Merit Award in recognition of their efforts to boost the professional competence of their staff.

Director of Operations Lau Yip-shing, Chairman of the Security and Guarding Services Industry Authority (SGSIA), Mr Cham Ka-hung, Chairperson of the Security Services Training Board of the Vocational Training Council (VTC), Ms Jane Curzon Lo, and Senior Assistant Executive Director of VTC, Ms Josephine Kea Chi-shun, officiated at the presentation ceremony.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr Lau pointed out that the overall law and order situation in Hong Kong saw sustained improvement in 2014. "The contributions of dedicated security practitioners are indispensable," he noted.

Mr Lau went on to say that each Regional Crime Prevention Office of the Force organises the Best Security Guards Award annually to recognise the achievements of security practitioners, in addition to paying regular visits to security companies, offering advice and guidelines, and supporting the security courses run by the relevant institutes.

The Crime Prevention Bureau and the VTC continue to jointly organise the SSBTA scheme, which was rolled out in 2011. This year the scheme comprises three categories: "Type I Security Company Licence" (offering general security services), "Type II Security Company Licence" (offering armoured transportation services), and "Type III Security Company Licence" (offering design, installation, maintenance and repair services of security systems).  A selection panel comprising representatives from the Force, VTC and SGSIA, assessed the resources allocated for training by the companies participating in the scheme. Selection criteria included the number of training hours and the staff involved in the past 12 months, coverage of training courses, and the involvement and support of the management.
