While officers worked hard to deal with large-scale public events, their family members also bore the brunt of such activities and suffered from pressure. Therefore, the Welfare Services Group (WSG) of Personnel Services and Staff Relations Branch has launched a special programme to help police families in different ways.
Welfare officers visited Chai Wan Police Married Quarters, Tsing Yi Police Married Quarters and Sau Mau Ping Disciplined Services Quarters in April and May and helped police families handle a changing social environment. They also set up a Welfare Services Promotional Counter in the quarters to exchange views and establish contacts with police families, as well as to invite the family members to write their words of support to the officers on thank-you cards. In addition, they conducted a survey in order to find out whether the families had been affected by public events and collected the residents' views on welfare services.
Welfare staff held a "Family Relationships Sharing Session" in each of the three quarters to help parents re-examine family relations and communicate with their children. At the session, some parents spoke of the changes in family relations and communication with their children, and their ways to handle divergence of values. In response, Police Welfare Officers exchanged with the parents ideas of maintaining family relations.
WSG will also organise "Positive Family Relations Workshops" to train up participants in developing strong family relations through role-play, demonstrations and experience sharing. WSG is recruiting "Caring Neighbour" volunteers for strengthening neighbourhood relationship, supporting frontline officers and promoting a caring culture within the Force through voluntary services. Officers or their family members who are interested to join the voluntary service, please call 2860-2443 / 2150-7986 for registration.
