Yuen Long District (YLDIST) has been running the “Strategy for Joining the Police” Programme for three consecutive years in a bid to help Form 6 students join the Force. Last year, the programme attracted a total of 91 young people.
The programme comprises four components: recruitment talk, police station visit, experience sharing with police volunteers, and Police College visit. For the mentees of the programme planning to join the Force, YLDIST also provided supplementary classes to help them get better prepared for the recruitment process. In last year’s programme, 14 mentees have applied for the post of Recruit Police Constable (RPC) and six of them finally succeeded in their applications.
On Jun 13, five of the mentees passed out from Police College after completing the 27-week RPC Foundation Training. One of them, RPC Ip Tung-fei, won the Silver Whistle Award with outstanding performances. Last year, he joined the programme and submitted application to join the Force right after sitting for the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination. He commented that the training in Police College was strenuous. He was glad that he was well prepared beforehand so he could overcome difficulties. He attributed his success not only to the support of his instructors, squad mates, family and friends, but also the assistance provided by the “Strategy for Joining the Police” Programme.
YLDIST Commander Tsang Cheung-tat, Yuen Long District Councilor, Ms Wong Wai-ling, mentees of “Project HIMALAYA”, and Junior Police Call members attended the passing out parade to show support to the mentees. Mr Tsang praised the mentees for their performances and encouraged them to strive for their goals.
So far, the programme has helped 12 mentees join the Force as Police Constables.
