For police regions and districts, education and publicity on road safety are ongoing efforts. In the past two months, officers had a busy time driving road safety messages home to as many target groups as possible.

T NTN

Traffic New Territories North (T NTN) held the second quarter Traffic Accident Reduction Co-ordination Committee Meeting on August 24, which was followed by a Road Safety Tea Gathering to forge closer ties with the community.

At the tea gathering, NTN Regional Commander Kwok Ho-fai met police officers from various NTN formations, members of the District Council Traffic and Transport Committees (T&TC) in NTN, members of the Hong Kong Road Safety Patrol (HKRSP) NTN and other stakeholders to review police work and traffic accident figures in the past half a year. Mr Kwok also introduced T TNT's strategy for reducing traffic accidents. He thanked all parties for their contributions to promotion of road safety.

In addition to video clips on T NTN's duties, there were booths set up by the Enforcement and Control Division to show the publicity items used by the Road Safety Team (RST) and general traffic equipment.

The day before, RST of T NTN held a New Territories North Safe Cycling Promotion Campaign at Yuen Chau Chai Park, Tai Po in conjunction with the Senior Patrol Team of HKRSP NTN, Tai Po District Junior Police Call (JPC) members and other volunteers.

Game booths were set up and publicity leaflets and souvenirs were handed out to disseminate messages on safe cycling. T NTN Acting Superintendent Li Man-kit, Chairman of T&TC of Tai Po District Council, Dr Lau Chee-sing, Chairman of Working Group on Tai Po Road Safety Campaign, Mr Cheung Kwok-wai, and Regional Commander of HKRSP NTN, Mr Lai Tin-cheung, officiated at a ceremony to start a cycling parade, with RST members and other participants setting off on bikes to hand out cycling safety leaflets and souvenirs to the public.

Congratulating the award winners, SSP Chan and the guests also reminded over 1 000 senior citizens and their families present to comply with traffic regulations and use traffic facilities properly.

Finally, SSP Chan and Ms Tse called on the audience to remain vigilant against phone scams.

T KE

To protect the elders collecting and transporting paper to recycle shops with handcart in Kwun Tong and Tseung Kwan O, the RST of Traffic Kowloon East (T KE) has visited the recycle shops and distributed conspicuous vests to the elderly scavengers, reminding them to use road crossing facilities and comply with traffic rules. The vest will make the elders more visible to motorists and reduce the risk of traffic accident, especially in darkness and bad weather.

EDIST

With the support of the Eastern District Council T&TC, Eastern District (EDIST) held the EDIST Road Safety Carnival 2015 in Victoria Park, Causeway Bay on August 29.

Among the officiating guests were EDIST Commander Graham Mitchelmore, Assistant District Officer (Eastern), Ms Au Tsz-kwan, Eastern District Council Chairman, Mr Wong Kin-pan, Superintendent of Traffic Hong Kong Island Kao Yau-ki, and members of the Eastern District Road Safety Publicity Campaign Committee, Dr Liu Kai-ming, Dr Lam Chi-kit and Mr Leung Ming-cheung.

Over 10 local representatives were appointed to the Eastern District Road Safety Publicity Campaign Committee for promoting road safety. The carnival succeeded in disseminating road safety messages to road users and pedestrians alike with game booths, a variety show, display of police armored vehicles, police motorcycles and traffic safety bus.

YLDIST

The Police Community Relations Office of Yuen Long District (YLDIST) visited the Pakistani Islamic Welfare Union on September 12, disseminated road safety and fight crime messages to Non-ethnic Chinese (NEC) students and encouraged them to join the JPC scheme.

Other activities of the visit included sharing of videos, case studies, introduction of the causes and figures of traffic accidents and briefing on law enforcement and traffic accident prevention measures, providing the students with a better understanding of police work and promoting racial harmony.
