The Selected Traffic Enforcement Priorities (STEP) 2016 were launched by the Force in early April to make clear its approach in taking enforcement actions against offences that cause accidents or obstruct traffic flow. STEP is part of the Force's three "E" strategies, namely road engineering, public engagement and enforcement, in achieving the Government's vision of "Zero Accidents on the Road, Hong Kong's Goal".

In 2015, a considerable number of deaths and injuries in traffic accidents in Hong Kong could have been avoided as they were caused by human error such as road users' inattentiveness, speeding, drugs and alcohol.

STEP is made with an aim to changing the undesirable behaviour of road users, and make it everyone's responsibility to ensure road safety.

Through STEP 2016, Police will continue working in partnership with others and engaging the community to make Hong Kong's roads safer. To inform members of the public of the newly-introduced STEP, the Force has recently launched an information page on the Police Public Page.

Superintendent of Traffic Branch Headquarters Yip Siu-ming encourages colleagues to browse the Force's public website and the relevant road safety video clips to get a better understanding of how the Force promotes road safety.
