As cycling has become increasingly popular, the Force has rolled out a series of activities recently to raise public awareness on cycling safety. The following articles depict some of the activities:
NTN
At the "Summer Safe Cycling cum Cycling Ambassador Appointment Ceremony" held on July 9, nearly 100 students took an oath before Senior Superintendent of Traffic New Territories North (T NTN) Lee Chi-wai to become Cycling Ambassadors. Other officiating guests included Tai Po Divisional Commander Chan Sze-man, Chairman of the Traffic and Transport Committee of Tai Po District Council and Regional Commander of Hong Kong Road Safety Patrol of the New Territories North Region (HKRSP NTN) Mr Lai Tin-cheung. The ceremony continued to adopt the slogan of last year - "Safety First, Cycling is Fun". Following a briefing on safety gear for cycling, the officiating guests kicked off a bicycle parade along the Tolo Harbour track to the Pak Shek Kok Promenade, where they distributed publicity materials to disseminate the message of safe cycling.
On separate functions on July 12 and 18, the Road Safety Team of T NTN, Tuen Mun District Councillors and MTR staff distributed handbills to pedestrians and cyclists outside Siu Hong and Tuen Mun West Rail Stations, with the support of the Police Community Relations Office and Traffic Team of Tuen Mun District, as well as HKRSP NTN, to remind passers-by of the dos and don'ts of road users.
TBHQ & NTS
Superintendent (Administration) of Traffic Branch Headquarters (TBHQ) Yip Siu-ming announced the launching of a one-week enforcement operation on safe cycling from August 10 to 16 at a joint cycling safety campaign conducted by TBHQ in partnership with New Territories South (NTS) Region, Police Cycling Club, Shatin Junior Police Call (JPC), HKRSP and the Auxiliary Medical Service on August 7. Mr Yip, together with Police volunteers and road safety partners, distributed leaflets to cyclists at the junction of Kiu Ha Road and Shui Chong Street in Shatin to urge them to comply with road traffic laws. Meanwhile, Chairman of Police Cycling Club Chan Chun-fai led some youngsters, who were recruited under a cycling safety initiative - Project Smart Rider of STDIST, to show to the cyclists the safety equipment and tips of safe cycling.
STDIST
To promote cycling safety and engage the community, Shatin District (STDIST) joined hands with various organisations in rolling out Project Smart Rider between June and August. The project aimed to train about 250 students from local primary and secondary schools to obtain a recognised cycling qualification.
The organisations that took part in the project included the Hong Kong Sports Institute, which provides its velodrome in Ma On Shan as a training venue; the Hong Kong Cycling Association, which trains students with an aim to getting the Bronze Certificate in cycling; the Police Cycling Club, which provides enthusiastic support; and the Hong Kong Jockey Club, which will provide its Shatin venue for an upcoming activity of the project. STDIST Inspectors, who have participated in the planning and running of the project, found the experience beneficial.
