Over 3 000 dog lovers participated in the Police Dog Trial 2016, jointly organised by the Police Dog Unit (PDU) and the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Hong Kong) (SPCA (HK)), at Siu Sai Wan Sports Ground on December 4. They enjoyed a demonstration by police dogs and taking photographs with the dogs, and had fun in game booths.
Proceeds of $390,000 raised from the event were donated to the SPCA (HK) for promoting animal welfare. Five hundred complimentary tickets were distributed to low-income families and elderly groups via non-governmental organisations.
Acting Director of Operations Cheng Yiu-mo, who was the officiating guest, said the triennial event offered an opportunity for the Force to show officers' care for dogs as well as other animals. He told the audience that the Animal Watch Scheme was launched by the Force in 2011 with an aim to enhancing public awareness of animal respect as well as dealing with animal abuse cases by means of education, promotion, intelligence gathering and investigation. He stressed that police dogs are the Force's long-term faithful partners in combatting crime and serving the community.
During the dog trial, the Dangerous Drug Detection Dog Champion showed its quick detecting ability in locating dangerous drug among 30 baggage while the Explosive Search Dog displayed its talent in an anti-terrorist performance with the Airport Security Unit (ASU) and their dogs.
After vigorous competitions, Sergeant Ho Kwok-on from Yuen Long District and his dog "King" acquired the overall champion of the Patrol Dog category after winning the obedience and attack events.
