The first workshop for parents of non-Chinese speaking students in 2016-17, organised by the Centre for Advancement of Chinese Language Education and Research of the Faculty of Education of the University of Hong Kong (HKU) with the support of the Police Community Relations Offices (PCROs) of Tuen Mun District (TMDIST) and Yuen Long District (YLDIST), was held on December 8 at Chung Sing Benevolent Society Mrs Aw Boon Haw Secondary School in Tuen Mun.
Assistant Professor of the HKU's Faculty of Education Dr Tai Chung-pui explained to over 50 Non-ethnic Chinese (NEC) parents and students effective ways to learn Chinese. The Principal of Mrs Aw Boon Haw Secondary School, Mr Chu Wai-ming, talked about the approach for parents to motivate their children to learn Chinese, while staff of the two PCROs introduced the Force's recruitment activities for NEC. The workshop inspired the parents to start career planning for their children and promote their children's participation in Project Himalaya by YLDIST and the recruitment programme launched by TMDIST.
Meanwhile, on December 29, YLDIST Commander Au Chin-chau chaired the fifth NEC liaison meeting, which served as a platform for NEC leaders to discuss their matters of concern with representatives of government departments. Mr Au encouraged the NEC to continue to join hands with the Force in fighting crime while other YLDIST officers briefed the NEC leaders about the crime situation in the district.
