Two Non-ethnic Chinese (NEC) trainees of Project Gemstone of Yau Tsim District (YTDIST) joined the Force after the passing-out parade at the Police College on February 18, bringing the number of NEC trainees joining the Force through Project Gemstone to eight.
Indian Police Constable (PC) Navninder Singh and Pakistani / Indonesian PC Saheed Abbas Khan, who were born and educated in Hong Kong, are diploma holders and speak English, Cantonese, Hindi and Urdu. Through Project Gemstone, they brushed up their Chinese proficiency and communication skills and were admitted to the Police College earlier.
At the invitation of YTDIST, Consul-General of Pakistan in Hong Kong Mr Abdul Qadir Memon, Consul (Consular & Education) of India in Hong Kong Mrs Mrinalini Srivastava, a few NEC leaders, community representatives of YTDIST and Presidents of YTDIST Junior Police Call Honorary Presidents' Council attended the passing-out parade in February to give their best wishes to the two NEC officers. They also expressed their gratitude to the Force for organising various training projects for NEC youngsters who are interested in joining the Force.
Mr Singh and Mr Khan, who have been posted to Sham Shui Po Division and Tsim Sha Tsui Division respectively, are aspired to act as a bridge between the Force and the public including racial minorities.
