The fourth Guangdong-Hong Kong (GD-HK) meeting on combatting illegal immigration across the territorial boundary was held in Hong Kong on February 28. Jointly chaired by Secretary for Security Mr Lai Tung-kwok and Director-General of the Border Control Department of the Ministry of Public Security Mr Chen Dingwu, the meeting reviewed the achievements made in the past year, and discussed the future strategies. Also attending the meeting were officials of the Security Bureau, Hong Kong Police Force, Customs and Excise Department and Immigration Department.
Since the commencement of the joint operations for tackling illegal immigration in February last year, the number of Non-ethnic Chinese illegal immigrants intercepted in Hong Kong dropped sharply from a peak of over 400 per month to about 60 this February.
Assistant Commissioner (Operations) Cheng Yiu-mo said that with the concerted efforts of the law enforcement agencies of the Mainland and Hong Kong, the situation of illegal immigration in Hong Kong has eased.
