Inspector Lui Hok-kiu of Patrol Sub-unit 1 of Airport District (APTDIST) led a team of officers to participate in Exercise Summer Blow 2017, which was organised by the Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK) on March 16 to test the co-ordination of stakeholders of the Hong Kong International Airport in the execution of contingency plans during inclement weather conditions.
More than 400 persons participated in the exercise, at which the entire airport community had to cope with multiple simulated scenarios in regard to crowd management, baggage handling, flight rescheduling and information dissemination during bad weather.
One of the scenarios was that the airport's weather condition was expected to worsen within a few hours, leading to the diversion of flights to neighbouring airports and the stranding of passengers in the terminal building. At this juncture, AAHK activated the Airport Emergency Centre to provide a platform for different organisations to exchange information.
APTDIST officers not only assisted the AAHK on crowd management, but also disseminated updated information to passengers. Mr Lui said that the annual exercise provided an excellent opportunity for frontline officers to familiarise with the contingency procedures and work in concert with other departments during inclement weather at the airport.
