To enhance the operational ability of frontline officers in policing public events and possible disturbances in the New Territories North (NTN) Region, the Police Tactical Unit C Company (PTU C Coy) conducted the second phase of Exercise FIERCEWHEEL with various Operations and Crime units of NTN Region and the Fire Services Department (FSD) on March 10.
Over 500 police officers from Tai Po, Yuen Long and Tuen Mun Districts, PTU C Coy, PTU X Coy (Public Order Events 1), Emergency Unit, Quick Reaction Force and Crime units of NTN took part in the exercise with 35 FSD officers. The exercise simulated a series of public processions and public meetings that eventually developed into a riot. The frontline officers and crime response teams not only had to cope with the situation and collect criminal evidence, but also co-ordinated with FSD officers in fire-fighting and rescuing casualties.
Senior Superintendent (Operations) NTN David Jordan and other observers from the Region gave feedback on ways to strengthen communication and tactics of the units. The two phases of the exercise had enhanced the confidence and ability of the officers in handling major incidents, as well as their understanding of the relevant procedures and tactics in tackling emergencies.
