Journey to Psychological Wellness - Love & Care
"Walking with a friend in the dark is better than walking alone in the light." - Helen Keller
Being faced with the increasing demands and challenges of police work, maintaining a healthy and positive psychological well-being is essential for Force members in handling our daily work. In view of this, the Psychological Services Group has set the theme of its promotion campaign "Journey to Psychological wellness - A.P.P.L.E." for this year as "Love & Care" with a view to fostering positive interpersonal relationship and showing respect, care and support to others.
As the Chinese proverb said, "Sharing your happiness is much better than enjoying your happiness by your own." Sharing joy with others makes our lives more meaningful and cultivating good interpersonal relationships can widen our social support network, which could console us in times of distress.
UNDERSTAND
"The gentleman aims at harmony, and not at uniformity. The mean man aims at uniformity, and not at harmony." – The Analects
In today's diverse society, prejudice and misunderstanding can be major obstacles to the establishment of interpersonal relationships. To nurture a harmonious relationship, it is important to show understanding and accommodation. Confucius said, "The gentleman aims at harmony, and not at uniformity." This means that despite having different views, a gentleman can still maintain a harmonious relationship with other people. To do this, we need to understand the views of others. Although we do not hold the same views, we can still appreciate and respect each other. Be empathetic, try to understand how others feel from their perspectives and then we can foster pluralism and maintain friendly relationships.
CONNECT
Looking out for work partners
Building a wide network of social support could be one of the best ways to deal with challenges in life. We probably spend much of our time at work. Some even joked that they saw their colleagues more often than their families. Hence, creating a cohesive and positive relationship with our team not only increases productivity but also improves our psychological well-being. Sometimes, all it takes is just showing some extra effort in knowing our team members and supporting each other in adversity.
CARE
If you love them, show them.
Comparing to Westerners, the Chinese are generally more introverted and do not often show one's emotions. We seldom heard the phrase of "I love you" in a traditional Chinese family. Many people even think that if we love someone, we simply keep love in our hearts and do not need to say it. However, researches have shown that expressing concerns and care to others is important in building a harmonious relationship. So, if you love someone, please take action to show your care and kindness before it is too late.
Having good interpersonal relationships is an integral part of a happy life. Let's not take our relationships for granted and act now to cultivate positive relationships through love and care.
