The Kowloon East Region (KE) launched a "Sole Good" initiative in light of a rising number of missing elders with dementia and other old age illnesses. The initiative puts forward the idea of applying a waterproof sticker to the inner sole of the elders' shoes to help identify missing elderly persons.
On July 8, the Regional Missing Person Unit of KE co-hosted the Prevention of Missing Persons Workshop with The Salvation Army and the Geriatric Department of Our Lady of Maryknoll Hospital in Wong Tai Sin to introduce the "Sole Good" initiative. The participants, in particular the relatives of the elderly persons, were receptive to the idea and commented that the stickers would be a good way to help recognise the elderly persons quickly should they be unable to identify themselves or encounter difficulties in finding their way home.
Based on past experience in dealing with missing person cases, officers observed that elderly persons who went missing were the ones who usually left home without carrying any kind of identification documents. However, they were all found dressed properly with shoes on. Hence, the "Sole Good" initiative promotes the use of waterproof shoe stickers carrying the information of the elders' contact person for quick identification. Thus, officers can contact their family members timely to relieve their anxiety.
