The Regional Crime Prevention Office of Kowloon West (RCPO KW) sent a letter to the presidents of four universities in the Region to express the Force's concern about an upsurge in telephone deception among undergraduates, in particular exchange students from the Mainland.
Led by Superintendent (Administration and Support) of Crime KW Regional Headquarters, officers of RCPO KW and Team 3 of Regional Crime Unit of Kowloon East met with the management of the four universities, namely The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hong Kong Baptist University, City University of Hong Kong (City U) and The Open University of Hong Kong, as well as staff of their Student Affairs Office and Mainland Student Affairs Office in early November to discuss ways to step up dissemination of anti-deception messages to students.
On November 2, RCPO KW joined hands with the Anti-Deception Coordination Centre, Police Community Relations Offices of various Districts of KW, and mentees of the Police Mentorship Programme to roll out a series of anti-scam publicity activities in the campuses. Through direct contact with and distributing publicity leaflets to the students, officers raised their awareness of different modes of telephone deception. On the other hand, the officers visited currency exchange shops in the Region to remind them to pay attention to suspicious remittance and put up anti-fraud posters in their shops so as to alert customers to beware of deception.
