The first-ever Kowloon West Community Engagement Day took place at Sham Shui Po Police Station on December 10, 2017, drawing the participation of over 20 000 citizens. The event was held by Kowloon West (KW) Region with an aim to disseminating crime prevention messages, enhancing public knowledge of policing as well as strengthening ties between the Force and the local communities.
Director of Operations Tang Ping-keung officiated at the opening ceremony of the event, together with KW Regional Commander Cheuk Hau-yip, District Commanders in KW Region, President of Kowloon West Youth-Care Committee Mr Cheung Chi-kong and other officiating guests. In addition to an exhibition showcasing historic pictures of police stations within the Region, the Force Rope Access Cadre, for the very first time, abseiled down to hand over a mace to the Police Band in a step to kick off the Community Engagement Day. Besides setting up over 14 game booths, the mobile command units and explosive ordnance disposal vehicles were also put on display.
Among the performers were the Police Dog Unit and the Emergency Unit (EU) of KW. The Symphonic Band of Munsang College and the Police Band participated in an instrumental ensemble while students of the Dominic Savio Kindergarten (Olympic Branch) were invited to perform a mini-march for road safety. The singing of the song "Under the Lion Rock" by Non-ethnic Chinese (NEC) students of Yaumati Kaifong Association School won applause from the audience.
Another highlight of the event was guided tours, during which police officers led the participants to walk around Sham Shui Po Police Station, a Grade II historic building in Hong Kong. Apart from 300 participants who had registered for the tour in advance, NEC organisations, a single-parent organisation as well as people with visual or hearing impairment were also invited to join the tour, fostering the spirit of community engagement.
