The Organized Crime and Triad Bureau (OCTB), together with officers from various Regions, mounted an "Operation Levington" on the evening of December 29, 2017, with an aim to curbing triad activities and their source of income. Before the year 2017 coming to a close, Commissioner Lo Wai-chung participated in the operation in order to show support to those officers fighting crimes at the forefront in the festive period and to know more about their work.
The Commissioner first arrived at Crime Hong Kong Island (HKI) offices to attend the operation briefing conducted by Chief Inspector Lam Kai-chor and Senior Inspector Leung Hoi-ki from the OCTB. The briefing, covering operational details and recent triad activities in the area, was attended by not only officers of the OCTB, but also those from Crime HKI, Anti-Triad Section of Central District and Police Tactical Unit (PTU) Z Company.
After the briefing, the party proceeded to Lan Kwai Fong, Central, immediately and conducted a series of liquor licence checks. The Commissioner then left for Kowloon West Region (KW) and joined another group of officers from the OCTB, Crime KW, Anti-Triad Section of Yau Tsim District and PTU B Company to carry on their anti-crime operation at various entertainment premises.
During the operation, the Commissioner was updated on the latest triad activities and the mode of business adopted by the entertainment premises in recent years. Meanwhile, he was also having the opportunity to observe the difficulties and challenges that officers might encounter in discharging their duties in the frontline.
At the break in the midnight, the Commissioner and the officers had snacks together at Tsim Sha Tsui Police Station, at which they had direct exchanges in a relaxing and informal atmosphere. The Commissioner also took the occasion to thank their dedicated effort in maintaining law and order and he assured them that continual support would be provided to all aspects of their work.
The operation, which concluded in the early morning, involved over 1 000 officers and resulted in the arrest of more than 80 persons for various offences across the territory.
Remarking on the Commissioner's visit, OCTB officers said they really appreciated they could work with the Commissioner in operation ground and they considered such kind of direct communication very effective, in which they were also able to learn more about the development of the Force.
The Commissioner will continue the initiative to visit frontline units while they are performing their regular duties with a view to fostering better mutual understanding with the officers at the forefront and experiencing their challenges at work. So far, he has visited a number of units, including PTU B Company, Airport District and Marine North Division.
