With the Chinese New Year around the corner, more police districts and units have implemented winter precaution measures, reminding the public to pay attention to the safety of their property, homes and shops, and keep a vigilant eye on crime and deception.
STDIST
Shatin District (STDIST) staged the Shatin District Winter Precaution Carnival in partnership with Sha Tin District Office of the Home Affairs Department and Sha Tin District Fight Crime Committee (STDFCC) on January 28. STDIST Commander Mak Lau Wai-mun, together with Chairman of Sha Tin District Council (STDC) Mr Ho Hau-cheung, STDFCC Chairman Mr Wong Ka-wing, other community leaders as well as members of Junior Police Call (JPC) and Senior Police Call (SPC), distributed anti-crime leaflets to tenants and shop attendants at Sha Tin town centre to remind them to stay alert of burglary and telephone deception. Meanwhile, Undersecretary for Security Mr Au Chi-kwong and District Officer (Sha Tin) Ms Chan Yuen-man presented awards to 10 outstanding police officers and four good citizens in appreciation of their efforts in fighting crime.
STDIST earlier staged an Anti-telephone Deception Street Drama performed by STDIST JPC and SPC members at Sha Tin Town Hall Plaza on January 7 to raise public awareness of the modus operandi of telephone scam. Senior Inspector of the Anti-Deception Coordination Centre Chan Kwok-wai gave fraud prevention tips to spectators and performers. The event was officiated by Mak Lau Wai-mun, Mr Ho Hau-cheung, Mr Wong Ka-wing, Acting District Officer (Sha Tin) Mr Wong Tin-pui, Chairman of STDIST SPC Honorary Presidents Council Mr Lee To-ming, Vice Chairman of STDIST JPC Honorary Presidents Council Ms Chan Po-kwan. Meanwhile, film director Mr Lee Lik-chi and artistic director cum 2017 awardee of Ten Outstanding Young Persons Ms Gigi Cheng were invited to be consultants to give views to the performers.
MKDIST
Mong Kok District (MKDIST) launched the Fight Crime Publicity Campaign for Winter Precaution on January 20 to disseminate crime prevention message and extend greetings to the local community. Led by MKDIST Commander Kerry Carew, along with Mr Yan Mou-keung and other members of Yau Tsim Mong District Fight Crime Committee, the activity was well attended by members of Junior Police Call and Senior Police Call, as well as non-ethnic Chinese from Project RING.
The team paid a visit to The Salvation Army Hoi Tai Residence for Senior Citizens, during which MKDIST officers played games with the elderly, showed a video on crime prevention and gave out gift packs to the elders. The activity not only spread joy and anti-crime messages to the senior citizens, but also promoted the Force’s spirit of caring the community and fostering cultural integration.
Afterwards, Mr Carew led the team to distribute gifts on the theme of combating crime to local residents and shop attendants in Tai Kok Tsui, and made home visits to remind the citizens to strengthen household security.
KTDIST
Kwun Tong District (KTDIST) partnered with Kwun Tong District Fight Crime Committee (KTDFCC) to launch Winter Precaution cum KTDIST Outstanding Police Officers Award 2017 in Yau Tong on January 13. The event aimed to remind members of the public to beware of household burglary and scams, and commend outstanding officers to encourage them to keep up their quality services.
In addition to broadcasting the Force’s counter-terrorism video “Run! Hide! Report!”, a microfilm produced by the Hong Kong Playground Association was shown to educate youngsters to abide by the law. KTDFCC Chairman Mr Chow Yiu-ming and other committee members presented KTDIST Outstanding Police Officers Award to 24 officers. KTDIST Commander Chan Kwok-kee thanked KTDFCC for their support.
Subsequent to the ceremony, KTDIST officers and KTDFCC members led volunteers from Junior Police Call and Senior Police Call to distribute leaflets and souvenirs to the public and shop attendants in Yau Tong and Lam Tin to disseminate crime prevention messages.
YTDIST
Yau Tsim District (YTDIST) Commander Chow Yat-ming, together with Chairman of Yau Tsim Mong District Council Mr Ip Ngo-tung, Chairperson of Yau Tsim Mong District Fight Crime Committee Ms Chan Heung-lin, other community representatives and members of YTDIST Senior Police Call, took part in a Winter Precaution and Fight Crime Publicity Campaign on January 5 at Yau Ma Tei Jade Hawker Bazaar, Jade Street and hawker stalls on Bowring Street.
They distributed anti-crime leaflets and red couplets to shopkeepers, hawkers and shoppers to alert them to step up shop security and take care of their personal belongings respectively.
PPRB
In a step to engage with the community, Chief Inspector (Television and Films Liaison) of the Police Public Relations Branch (PPRB) Wong Lai-ying, Executive Producer of Radio Television Hong Kong Ms Nancy Ching and other crew members of the Police Magazine sent festive greetings to the public on January 30 along with Mong Kok District (MKDIST) Commander Kerry Carew as well as officers and Senior Police Call members of MKDIST to welcome the Spring Festival at various locations in Mong Kok.
Mr Carew and actors of the Police Magazine dressed up in traditional Chinese costume whilst actor “Kin gor” transformed himself into Caishen. They wished everyone a prosperous and peaceful Year of the Dog. The passers-by were overjoyed as they took photographs and received Chinese New Year gifts and crime prevention tips from the team.
