The Police Launch Simulation System was opened by Director of Operations Tang Ping-keung, Regional Commander of Marine Patrick Hodson and Acting Deputy Regional Commander of Marine Lau King-lun at the Marine Police Training School on February 12.
The system comprised an instructor station and two full-mission stations for trainees. With the installation of 360-degree display panels, the system is the first of its kind in Hong Kong that could simulate police launches and high-speed small crafts under varying weather and sea conditions and could feature over 100 types of other vessels in different scenarios for training.
The trainees' stations are equipped with a range of navigational aids, such as a water-jet propulsion device control system, a standard marine radar system, an Electronic Chart Display and Information System, a Global Maritime Distress and Safety System and various communication systems. The instructors could record trainees' practical sessions for subsequent evaluation and debriefings. The new system fully meets the training requirements of the International Maritime Organization under the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers.
Mr Tang said that the simulation system would provide a safe and controlled environment for trainees to receive navigational training in different scenarios. This would enable trainees to test their judgement in critical situations, and would reduce the risks and expenses involved in training on real police launches. This simulation system would undoubtedly help enhance the professionalism of Marine Police.
