More than 100 police volunteers and over 10 representatives from various charitable and voluntary agencies attended the Annual Gathering of the Hong Kong Police Volunteer Services Corps (HKPVSC) at the Police Sports and Recreation Club on January 6.
The Convenor of HKPVSC, Mr Chan Kin-kwok, presided over the opening ceremony. Commissioner Lo Wai-chung was invited to present the 2016 Award for Volunteer Service (Group), Award for Volunteer Service (Individual), Award for Volunteer Service (Family) and Long Service Award to individual volunteers and volunteer groups.
Mr Lo praised thousands of police volunteers for providing voluntary services in a number of community events, such as Oxfam Trailwalker and Orbis Moonwalkers. He encouraged Force members and their families to continue supporting volunteer services.
More than 30 police volunteer teams of HKPVSC devoted over 100 000 hours to volunteer work in 2016. In this connection, the Social Welfare Department (SWD) presented the Gold Award for Volunteer Service to the HKPVSC in 2017 in recognition of its long hours of service. The police volunteer teams also received 25 gold, two silver and three bronze awards from the SWD in the group category of volunteer service. In addition, 19 police volunteers were presented with the Long Service Award.
At the annual gathering, the Founding President of the Hong Kong Volunteer Awardees Society, Ms Chea Shuk-mui; a representative of the Hong Kong Kennel Club, Mrs Imelda Lui; and a Force volunteer of "Life Buddies" Mentoring Scheme, Mr Leung Ka-man, shared with the volunteers the visions of their organisations and the importance of voluntary work. A volunteer, Dr Chan Mei-ling, was also invited to share the joy of participating in voluntary services.
