A group of police trainees accompanied some mentally incapacitated persons (MIPs) for a walk to Shing Mun Reservoir on March 24. The event, co-organised by the School of Foundation Training of the Police College and Wai Ji Christian Service, provided an opportunity for the police trainees to reach out to MIPs.

Director of the Police College Lau Chi-wai officiated at the kick-off ceremony, together with Legislative Council Member Dr Cheung Chiu-hung and Assistant Director of Social Welfare Department Mr Kok Che-leung.

About 1 000 people participated in the event. Under the encouragement of 44 probationary inspectors and 270 recruit police constables, over 300 MIPs completed an 8.5-kilometre walk around the reservoir and admired its beautiful scenery.

The event enabled both groups to better understand each other. The MIPs learned to build up positive life values while the police trainees increased their awareness of the needs of MIPs to prepare for frontline policing work.
