Commissioner Lo Wai-chung presided over the opening ceremony of a mural on "Fight Crime Together and Create Harmonious Community" at Mong Kok Police Station on May 13. This showed his support for the donor of the wall painting, the Hong Kong Mucopolysaccharidoses & Rare Genetic Diseases Mutual Aid Group.
The Police Dragon Boat Club held a Charitable Dragon Boat Race last October to raise fund for some charity groups, including patients of the Mutual Aid Group. As a token of gratitude, the Mutual Aid Group proposed to the Force the idea of painting a dragon boat on a wall. Their goodwill was received warmly by Mong Kong District (MKDIST) on behalf of the Force. Over the past few months, wall painters, patients of the Mutual Aid Group, parents, doctors, volunteers, Junior Police Call (JPC) members and officers of MKDIST jointly painted the dragon boat on an exterior wall of Mong Kok Police Station. The painting carried the theme of "Together we sail with all races, including the physically challenged and able-bodied, sparing no effort to uphold the law and fight crime".
Also officiating at the opening ceremony were Chairman of the Mutual Aid Group Mr Chau Po-yuen, Regional Commander of Kowloon West Cheuk Hau-yip, Chairperson of Police Dragon Boat Club Ms Lam Hiu-tong, MKDIST Commander Kerry Carew and Chairman of MKDIST JPC Honorary Presidents Council Mr Lo Kam-choi. Other participants included patients of the Mutual Aid Group as well as their families, local community leaders, members of Senior Police Call and JPC, and volunteers.
Mr Chau represented the Mutual Aid Group to present a greeting card and a book titled "Rare Parents" to Commissioner Lo. Then Commissioner Lo sent gifts to representatives of the Mutual Aid Group, and a scroll depicting the dragon boat mural to Mr Chau. The dragon boat symbolises a bridge connecting the Force and the Mutual Aid Group. Afterwards, Commissioner Lo, together with wall painter Ms Heather Ng and other representatives, dotted the eye of the dragon boat on the mural. Commissioner Lo extended his best wishes to the patients and their family members.
The parents of Mr Chu Yat-long, a patient of the Mutual Aid Group, hoped that the mural would spread the message of caring to the community and make people with disabilities realise that Hong Kong is a blessed land. One of the participants, MKDIST JPC member Ms Chan Lok-sze, said the event has raised public awareness of Mucopolysaccharidoses and rare genetic diseases, and highlighted the importance of social inclusion and crime prevention.
