Regional Commander of Hong Kong Island (HKI) Yu Tat-chung presented appointment letters to 88 new members of Evidence Gathering Teams (EGTs) on May 2. These members would help to gather evidence in public events in a bid to curb illegal acts of radical protesters.

The EGT members have attended a basic training course run by the HKI Regional Public Order Event Investigation Team. Representatives from the Organized Crime and Triad Bureau, the Police Public Engagement Office and the Police Tactical Unit shared with the members their expertise in handling public events. Kowloon East and Kowloon West Regions also sent EGT representatives to attend the course for exchanging experience and fostering collaboration.

HKI established 10 EGTs in 2015 to enhance its effectiveness in tackling public events. In 2017, the EGTs were summoned 72 times, bringing the total number of deployment since their inception to 183. They have been effective in conducting their tasks.
