A member of the public, Mr Wong, presented a pennant to officers of the Anti-Deception Coordination Centre (ADCC) on May 21 in recognition of their professionalism and efficiency in intercepting his daughter's payment to a swindler.
The case took place on May 1 as Mr Wong's daughter, residing in Vancouver, received a phone call from a person impersonating a Mainland official. She transferred 100,000 Canadian dollars (about HK$620,000) to a Hong Kong bank account as instructed by the swindler. Feeling suspicious, the victims sought advice from ADCC the following day and found that they were deceived. ADCC officers immediately assisted the victims in making a formal report to the Police and activated the stop-payment mechanism to recover the money.
