The Emergency Unit of Kowloon East (EU KE) organised a public engagement programme for local elders on May 28 at KE Operational Base to raise their awareness of counter terrorism (CT). Sixty members of Senior Police Call joined the programme.
In addition to showing a CT video on the trilogy of "Run, Hide, Report" and a display of EU equipment, the officers gave a brief talk to the elderly participants on what they should do in the event of a terrorist attack.
On the following day, the elderly participants were invited to play the role of simulated spectators in a CT exercise, codenamed "AIMHIGH", at the Hong Kong Velodrome. Also participating in the exercise included EU KE, the Police Tactical Unit of KE, the Kowloon Regional Command and Control Centre (RCCC) and the Counter Terrorism Response Unit (CTRU). The exercise simulated an attack initiated by several terrorists in a sports event. The terrorists sneaked into the venue and attacked the spectators with firearms and other lethal weapons. EU KE and CTRU promptly arrived at the scene, under the co-ordination of Kowloon RCCC, to neutralise the incident.
KE Deputy Regional Commander James Betts presided over the exercise. He, together with observers from KE Formations, said the public engagement programme and the exercise were conducive to raising public awareness of CT and consolidating the professional capabilities and co-ordination of frontline officers in tackling terrorist incidents.
