The Police Intranet (POINT) and the search engine, which play an important role in the internal communication of the Force, will be revamped. As funding has been approved for the revamp, the Website Content Uploading System (WCUS) will be replaced by a more efficient system. The revamp of the entire system is expected to be completed in early 2019.
The POINT and its search engine have been in operation since 1996 and 2002 respectively as a tool for browsing and searching information relating to the Force. The enhanced POINT and search engine can provide better user experience for Force members, with the aim of strengthening internal communication and increasing work efficiency. As such, the E-Police Division (EPOL) of the Information Systems Wing (ISW) has been working actively to optimise officers' use of POINT on different devices such as desktop computers, tablets and mobile devices.
In order to update Force members on the project progress, EPOL set up a dedicated website for the POINT Revamp Project last December. In addition, a series of briefings and demonstration sessions were organised this March and June to offer WCUS Content Managers and Editors a deeper understanding of the new system, including its main features, numerous improvements, and the implementation and data migration plans.
As part of the project, the search engine of POINT will be enhanced to cope with the ever-increasing mass of information to meet the expectations of officers. The list of improvements includes, inter alia, an enhanced user interface, increased system resources, faster search speed, and higher accuracy and relevance of search results. Through the enhancement of the search engine, higher effectiveness and efficiency can be achieved in the discharge of duties and internal communication. To this end, Superintendent of EPOL Lam Tsz-fai and Systems Manager of the Operation Communication Solutions Team 2 Ms Kwan Wai-ching briefed the chairpersons and representatives of staff associations at a meeting in June on details of the search engine enhancement.
