The Road Safety Council (RSC) held its 45th Anniversary Ceremony cum Safety Walk Carnival at the Peak on November 25 to enhance public awareness of road safety. About 1 000 people participated in the event.
Officiating at the ceremony were RSC Chairperson cum Deputy Commissioner (Operations) Tang Ping-keung, Chairperson of the Road Safety Research Committee cum Acting Deputy Commissioner for Transport (Planning and Technical Services) Mr Wilson Pang, and Chairperson of the Road Safety Campaign Committee Miss Ma Ka-wai.
Mr Tang expressed his heartfelt gratitude to RSC members and their working partners for their contribution and support. He said roads in the city are like blood vessels that provide nutrients and energy to the body. The RSC has been maintaining a safe and effective road system in Hong Kong for the past 45 years, the same way as members of the public care for their vascular health.
The RSC has undertaken a lot of education and publicity work over the year to alert the public of the causation factors of traffic accidents. Efforts have also been made to promote the safety of elderly and student pedestrians, cycling safety, attentive driving, anti-drink driving and anti-drug driving. Mr Tang appealed to the public to continue to work together to realise the vision of "Zero Accidents on the Road, Hong Kong's Goal".
The participants took part in a 3.5-kilometre walk along Harlech Road and Lugard Road, and a carnival at Mount Austin Playground. Road safety messages were spread at checkpoints along the walk and in game booths.
