Border District (BORDIST) launched a year-long programme, "Fun Frontier Walk 2019", in celebration of the 175th anniversary of the Hong Kong Police Force. The programme gives schools and uniformed groups an opportunity to join guided tours to Ta Kwu Ling Police Station, a Grade III Historic Building, and the MacIntosh Fort at Pak Fu Shan, a Grade II Historic Building that is open to the public for the first time. A kick-off ceremony of the programme was held at the MacIntosh Fort on January 18.
Regional Commander of New Territories North (NTN) Kwok Yam-yung, Deputy Regional Commander of NTN Chan Yee-lai and BORDIST Commander Chiu Wai-po attended the ceremony, together with Chairman of North District Fight Crime Committee Mr Deng Kai-rong, Chairman of BORDIST Junior Police Call (JPC) Honorary President Council Mr Lee Koon-hung, Vice-chairman of Ta Kwu Ling District Rural Committee (TKLDRC) Mr Lam Kam-kwai and representatives of JPC, Senior Police Call (SPC), the Antiquities and Monuments Office (AMO) and the Police Mentorship Programme (PMP) as well as officers from three divisions of BORDIST.
Speaking at the ceremony, Chiu Wai-po showed gratitude to all parties, including TKLDRC, AMO, members of PMP and officers, for their support to the programme. Thirty-four officers from BORDIST and one SPC member were appointed as guided tour ambassadors.
The programme aims to show the contribution of BORDIST to boundary defence, demonstrate the professionalism of the Force and promote community engagement. It features the work of BORDIST, the history of boundary defence, a display of old police uniforms and gears, interactive games on mobile phones, a bookmark making workshop, a fingerprinting activity and guided tours to historic police buildings. The response to the programme is enthusiastic and so far over 80 appointments have been received.
Previews were held earlier for the AMO, members of PMP and Probationary Inspector (PI) Courses 166 to 168 on September 28 and October 19, 2018 and January 11, 2019 respectively. All the participants enjoyed the tours and reckoned that it was a good opportunity to increase public understanding of police work at the boundary.
