A total of 107 volunteers were appointed as members of the Operation Breakthrough in a ceremony at Sau Mau Ping Police Station on February 28. They will serve as mentors to assist young people in need.

The Operation Breakthrough is a police-led charity that provides sporting opportunities for young people from disadvantaged background as well as those who have gone astray. Its motto is "Sports can change lives". All the programmes are delivered by serving or retired police officers, with the support of non-governmental organisations. Currently, it runs 11 sporting programmes and over 400 young people participate in the activities every year.

At the appointment ceremony, Chairman of the Operation Breakthrough Glenn O'Neill and Sau Mau Ping District Commander Wong Kwong-hing encouraged the new volunteers, including 93 serving police officers, six retired police officers, five officers from other disciplinary forces and three professionals, to instill positive values in young people and promote a caring culture in the community.

All volunteer officers who are appointed as members of the Operation Breakthrough will automatically become members of the Police Volunteer Services Corps. The information will be recorded in the Force's Personnel Information Communal System. They will also be eligible for the Social Welfare Department's Volunteer Service Awards. Should any officer wish to become a volunteer of the Operation Breakthrough, please contact Senior Inspector Yuen Kit-man at kityuen@police.gov.hk.
