The Force, the Marine Department and the Leisure and Cultural Services Department held the 2019 Safety Afloat Educational Seminar at the Hong Kong Science Museum on May 21 to raise public awareness of water sports safety.

Senior Inspector Lee Ying-wa from Marine South Division, together with other Marine Police Officers, gave a briefing to the audience. Ms Lee said that 31 accidents relating to water sports, water-skiing, swimming and slipping on stairs were recorded in 2018. She analysed nine water activity accidents that occurred from last July to March this year. These accidents involved cruising, drowning, rock fishing, vessel on fire and underwater work. Ms Lee urged the audience to take care of themselves and other people when taking part in water activities. She said, for example, they should go with their peers and pay attention to weather reports to avoid accidents.

The seminar was well-received and enhanced the participants' awareness of water sports safety.
