The anti-extradition bill movement has been on-going for half a year since June. Its impact on the Hong Kong society, including the operation of public services, is unprecedented. And to the Police Force, it is a challenge never experienced before.
The young population has made up a significant part of the protest population. Amongst the arrested, about 40 per cent were students, of which a significant number of them were under 18 years old.
In view of the circumstances, Deputy Commissioner (Operations) Siu Chak-yee organised a sharing session themed "Understanding the Mindset of Youngsters in Social Movement" at the Police Headquarters on December 9, inviting guest speakers including Associate Professor of Department of Psychology of the University of Hong Kong, Dr Christian Chan; veteran social worker Mr Keswick Chuk; and Principal of Salesians of Don Bosco Ng Siu Mui Secondary School, Mr Li Kin-man, to share their views on the current social movement. More than 200 frontline officers involved in Operation TIDERIDER attended the event, which provided an interactive platform to boost understanding of the youngsters' mindsets and the views of different stakeholders in society. The enhanced understanding not only helps resolve the conflict, but also eases the tension in the society.
Both the guest speakers and attendees welcomed the sharing session as it enhanced mutual understanding of the efforts of all professions. The shared vision was that different sectors could join hands with the Police Force to restore peace and order in the society.
